Gainesville Solar electric incentives:
Solar Electric (PV) System Rebate
Invest in renewable energy
Solar photovoltaic (PV) technology can produce all or a portion of a home’s energy needs during daylight hours. This rebate offers a financial incentive to residential customers who install PV systems by offsetting some of the upfront costs.
Rebate Offer
Up to $7,500
Participants will be reimbursed a rate per watt based on the amount of direct or diffused sunlight available based on PV system's location.
Rate per Watt
Rate will be based on the Solar Pathfinder evaluation performed by contractor.
- $1.50 per watt for a solar window of 85% or greater
- $1.15 per watt for a solar window of 70-84%
- Rebate not available for solar windows lower than 70%
Total Watts Calculation
(PTC rating for each module*) x (# of modules) x (Inverter efficiency**) = Total AC watts
*Refer to California's PTC ratings
**Refer to California's inverter efficiency guidelines
Additional Incentive
Customers will receive reimbursement for the solar energy they do not use by interconnecting their PV system with the GRU electric system and receiving theprevailing net metering rate.
Eligibility
- Location must be within GRU's electrical service territory with residential electric service
- Capacity is limited; rebates will only be issued to customers who receive pre-approval from GRU before system installation begins
- GRU's site inspection and the Solar Pathfinder evaluation will determine rebate eligibility
- Photovoltaic modules must be UL- or ETL-listed
- Customer must carry and maintain at least $100,000 liability insurance
- PV system must have at least a five-year warranty from the manufacturer or installer
- Contractor must be currently certified to install solar electric systems by Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation Construction Industry Licensing Board
- All PV systems interconnected to GRU's electrical grid must comply with current City of Gainesville guidelines governing interconnection with GRU's electric system and any subsequent revisions to these guidelines. Refer to GRU's Energy Delivery Service Guide for details
- Customer must transfer to GRU all renewable energy credits (RECs) and other environmental attributes from power generated by PV systems
- Rebate offer may not exceed the purchase price
- Program is subject to change without notice and dependent on funding availability
- GRU retains the right to apply the rebate to any delinquency on any account in the customer's name.
How to Apply
- Contact contractor(s) to get estimate and Solar Pathfinder evaluation to determine potential solar capacity at the property
- Request a site inspection by submitting the following to GRU:
- GRU will perform a site inspection of the property to determine rebate eligibility. Rebates will only be issued to customers who receive pre-approval from GRU before system installation begins
- If GRU determines the site meets rebate eligibility, customers must submit it to GRU for engineering approval:
- After receiving engineering approval, customers have 60 days to have the system installed. Licensed electrical contractors must obtain all necessary permits and perform all electrical interconnections.
- Arrange to have city/county building inspections performed. City/county inspectors will notify GRU and GRU staff will inspect the system and connect the meter
- Complete and mail the following to GRU within 90 days of installation:
- Upon approval, rebate check will be mailed to the customer within four to six weeks
- GRU will credit customer's bill for all excess power generated by the PV system at the prevailing net metering rate
Solar FIT
Solar Feed-in-Tariff expected to spur local economic development
Customers signing onto the FIT invest in their own PV systems to generate electricity and sell energy directly to GRU under a contract for 20 years at a fixed price.
How to Apply
Applications will be accepted January 17 - 21, 2011. The exact capacity available will be announced before the application period. If applications exceed available capacity during this time, an independent third-party will select projects for inclusion by random drawing. If capacity is not reached, applications will continue to be accepted beyond January 21, 2011 on a first-come, first-served basis until capacity is reached.
Early Opportunity for Systems 10 Kilowatts or Less:
GRU accepted applications in October 2010 for 400 kilowatts of capacity available in 2011. We have received enough applications to fill this capacity and are no longer accepting applications for this portion of the program.
Required documents
The following documents must be completed and returned to GRU as part of the Solar FIT application package:
- Application
- Completed W9 tax form
- Completed GRU vendor form
- Proof of liability insurance (minimum $200,000)
- Copy of solar or electric contractor license
- System 1 line diagram
- Proof of property ownership or leasehold
- Systems over 10 kW: reservation deposit ($30/kW times proposed system output capacity)
- Non-refundable processing fee: $500 for systems 10kW or less; $1,200 for systems over 10kW
- Government or non-profit entities can submit copies of pending requests for proposal (RFP) in lieu of cash reservation deposit.
Upon GRU engineering approval, a signed Solar Energy Purchase Agreement (SEPA) and interconnection agreement - will be executed. (view sample agreement)
GRU's Solar Water Heating Rebate
Invest in renewable energy
A solar water heating system may be one of the best investments you can make in solar energy technology. Around 30 percent of a household's energy costs are for water heating. Solar water heaters are capable of generating the same amount of heated water at a fraction of the energy expense compared to contemporary water heating systems.
Rebate Offer
Residential/small business: $500 for equipment and installation of active or passive systems that meet GRU solar water heater requirements
Eligibility
- GRU residential or business electric customers
- Customer must have a water heater powered by electricity or natural gas supplied by GRU
- Solar system must meet GRU solar water heater requirements
- Contractor must be currently certified to install solar water heaters by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation Construction Industry Licensing Board
- Limit 1 rebate per location
- Rebate offer may not exceed the purchase price
- Rebates are subject to change without notice and are subject to approval
How to Apply
- Arrange for an eligible contractor to provide an estimate and then install equipment that meets GRU solar water heater requirements
- Submit the following to GRU within 90 days of installation:
